Authentic Tamales Recipe

Tamales are one of the most beloved Mexican dishes in the world. For centuries, they’ve been cherished for their unique flavor and texture, which is why they’re often served at special occasions like weddings and birthdays. But what makes tamales so special? The answer lies in the careful preparation of the ingredients, which can be traced back to ancient Mayan culture.

Today, tamales are still prepared in much the same way as they have been for centuries, using a combination of masa harina (corn flour), lard, and spices. When these ingredients are combined, the result is a savory, hearty dish that’s sure to please even the pickiest eaters. That said, it can take a bit of practice to master the art of making authentic tamales. But with a few simple tips and a delicious recipe, anyone can make delicious, homemade tamales in no time.

To get started, you’ll need masa harina, lard, and a handful of spices. Masa harina is a finely ground corn flour that gives tamales their signature texture. Lard adds a rich flavor and helps bind the ingredients together. Finally, spices like cumin, garlic, and oregano will add a savory kick to your tamales. Once you have all the ingredients gathered, it’s time to start cooking.

Start by making the masa. In a large bowl, combine three cups of masa harina, one cup of lard, and one teaspoon of salt. If you’d like to add flavor to the masa, try adding a few tablespoons of chili powder or cumin. Then, mix the ingredients until they form a soft dough. If the dough is too dry, add a few tablespoons of warm water. With the dough ready, it’s time to shape the tamales.

To shape the tamales, take a ball of the masa dough and flatten it into an oval shape. Place some of your favorite filling in the center of the oval and wrap the edges of the dough around it, forming a pocket. Then, place the wrapped tamale in a corn husk and tie it closed with a piece of string. Continue this process until all of the masa dough has been used.

Once the tamales are wrapped, it’s time to cook them. Fill a large pot with two inches of water and bring it to a boil. Carefully place the tamales in the boiling water and cover the pot. Let the tamales simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the masa is cooked through.

When the tamales are finished cooking, let them cool slightly before unwrapping and serving. Enjoy your homemade tamales with a side of salsa and a cold margarita. Buen provecho!
